Originally conceived as a DLC to its prequel, Lucah: Born of a Dream, this frantic, hackand- slash Souls-lite was expanded to a full release that oozes playability. The visual style at first feels nigh-impenetrable, yet within mere minutes navigating the jittery scratches and scribbles are second nature.
Controls are simple — a light and heavy attack, a dash move, the ability to perform a well-timed parry and a secondary attack from your accompanying familiar. But Death of a Wish’s sheer variety of passive buffs and combat perks perform miracles with this limited moveset.
Progress is made through exploring, light puzzle solving and by fighting larger enemies known as nightmares. While you can respawn at checkpoints, developer melessthanthree has included ‘rewinds’ that return you to the battle’s start if things aren’t going well.
The vast number of unlocks throughout allows each player to perfect their loadout. The mechanics may be well-trodden, but rarely have they been done with such style.
