Your role is to solve the murders of both your father and stepmother, but it isn’t a simple open-and-shut case. Bound to a demon companion, you are required to enter the demonic world containing your parents’ bodies to unravel the mystery.
You aren’t alone in the demonic world though, with monsters of varying difficulty [1] needing to be dispatched. Dead monsters drop ink and this can be sent back to the real world via teleporters to gain ability upgrades. Should you be killed by a monster while in possession of ink, they absorb it and become stronger.
Puzzles range from finding codes for locked doors to saving people in the demonic world and bringing them home [2]. Items are collected at regular intervals, and I liked the fact that, much like a true detective, you have to zoom in and inspect every little detail on each item for potential clues.
A mysterious tattoo artist and shopkeeper are on hand for your ability and health upgrades, from increased jumping abilities [3] to health upgrades, allowing you to go back and unlock new areas.
FANTASTIC, MR. FOX?
The dark artwork is absolutely gorgeous and fits the eerie mood perfectly. Unfortunately, some seriously awkward controls and the lack of an on-screen map (meaning you have to keep looking at it via the Options menu) prevent the game from being completely fluid but The Last Case of Benedict Fox is definitely worth a look.
